Frequently Asked Questions

For problem reports, comments and general enquiries concernng the website, please contact the webmaster. You will need to be logged in to do that.

If you are trying to upload an image using the image tool (camera icon) in the editor and it fails to appear on the website (with no reason given), it may be too big. The images uploaded so far have been resized so that their longer side is 800 pixels, resulting in a file size of around 100K-200K bytes.

First you need to get yourself a user name and password as only registered users are allowed to post content. All SRGA tenants are allowed to register and this can be done either by leaving your details at the trading hut and asking for an account or by using the Create new account link in the left hand sidebar. If you choose the latter method, your registration will not be immediate; the request will be forwarded to the website administrator, who will create your account as long as the email address you give is one that we recognize. Currently the only way to register email addresses is by handing them in at the trading hut. Whichever method you choose is going to involve a trip to the trading hut!

Choosing the right content type

Once you are a registered user, you should be able to post any of the content types listed below by clicking on Create Content in the left hand sidebar:

blog

We are using this as a general purpose content type so, if in doubt, use this; we can always change it to something else later. For example, if we find that we are building up a large body of knowledge on a particular subject, we could consolidate those blogs into a book structure and have it as a major title under `articles' in the left hand sidebar.

book page

Use this type to add to one of the `articles' in the left hand sidebar.

event

An event. This will automatically appear in the Upcoming Events list in the right had sidebar.

image

You can upload an image either via Create content->Image or by using the image tool (camera icon) inside the editor if you want to embed the image inside a post. You may find that images fail to upload if they are too big. As a guideline, please restrict the image size to 800 pixels along the larger dimension. If you are embedding an image in a textual post, we recommend that you use the default image assist settings, i.e. thumbnail size, link to image. If you do this, then users will get the `lightbox' effect when they click on the image.

page

Probably not necessary.

recipe

For your favourite recipes.

story

An announcement or news story. This is the only type of content that will automatically appear on the home page.

Also you can comment on already posted material or join in discussions in the forums

Using the editor

A wysiwyg editor is provided which is probably adequate for for simple posts consisting of a few paragraphs and maybe some lists and embedded images. If you wish to paste into the editor from a Word document, this is possible but you must use `paste from Word' rather than a normal paste, otherwise you will end up with a big mess of unwanted formatting instructions. Unfortunately, depending on your browser and its settings, the paste from Word button is sometimes greyed out and inoperational.

When you have finished entering your text, remember to click the Save link near the bottom of the page.

It is worth noting that some of the longer pieces on this website have been created offline in an HTML editor and subsequently pasted into the site. If you would like to contribute a long article and have complex formatting requirements, please contact me and I'm sure we can sort something out.

Tagging

Most content types can be tagged and this provides one means by which vistors can find their way around. You wil probably have noticed the `tag clouds' in the left and right hand sidebars. Larger tags are supposed to indicate that more content is tagged with that keyword. We have used a free tagging vocabulary, which means that you can create new tags simply by typing them.
