Starlings, once one of our most familiar birds, are in serious decline with numbers falling by 60-70% since the 1970s according to the Ornithology Trust. Locally, however, starling numbers seem to have undergone a bit of a revival this year, with a flock seen around The Hiron end of the allotments several times recently. Today an adult was feeding a juveniile on plot 114. Earlier this week, a group of long-tailed tits were in a tree on ?plot 29. This bird is thought to be doing better, with numbers increasing.
Plenty of butterflies around the site just now, but difficult to identify some of them because they don't settle for long. Definite sightings of Gatekeeper butterfly on plot 114.
